I was collecting eggs today and for some reason remembered that when I was about ten or eleven I was terrified of hens. If anyone had told me then that I would have a small flock of them, clean them out, look for mites and all the other jobs I would have laughed at them.

It was their feet and the way that they flapped about that scared me.

I had no interest in birds when I was younger and could not understand people who were.  Now I have learnt about them and their characteristics I find them fascinating, amusing and am always amazed how quickly they grow from being a chick to an independent bird.  I have a couple of 6 week old quail hens who have just started to lay eggs!

Does anyone still get asked.... You keep chickens..? But how... they dirty / smelly blah blah blah....?

As an example, when Gill took the kids to school, and our kids would mention we have chooks, the other mums would then ask the usual questions...

By the end of it, their kids are wanting chickens, and not the usual rabbit, hamster, guinea pig etc......

I was locked into the chicken shed for over an hour when I was a small child and was terrified. Fortunately it didn't take too long for me to realise they were as frightened of me as I was of them.

My visitors always get mealworms to hand feed to my girls - I notice a huge change in attitude after that.
