Broken Sweetcorn
« on: June 14, 2013, 09:11 »
I have a sweetcorn plant that was broken at the top by a cat. The strange thing is I but a band round it as it wasn't fully severed and put it in a pot in the greenhouse until I can decide where to plant it. I have come into the greenhouse and the top has completely fallen off and the band was tightly wrapped around the bottom of the stem. Nobody else been in garden or greenhouse so do cat's have thumbs ?

Anyway, will it still grow and crop or is that yet another failed plant for me to notch up ?

Gutted. I would have thought it would have grown again considering when you cut the tips off flowers they grow even more.

The growing part of the plant is the stem so if you cut it its gone for good..

Sweetcorn is a variety of grass so it grows from the base rather than the top.

I'm rather hoping mine grows a lot faster than grass!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

How tall should sweet corn be by now? Mine are only 10 inches high and I would have thought they would need to be a lot taller by now? I only sowed 12 this year and 9 have survived this far so not bad so far for a first attempt I think...

just let it grow the only thing is you need a few for them to produce cobs so a green house is not the best place if you want a crop  :(

They always seem to suddenly thicken up a lot, then go up fast. 10 inches at the mo sounds ok though.

Ok, I will see what happens then. I would love to get cobs this year but I am not expecting to do it so will treat this year as a learning experience of what to do/what not to do.
