Kestrel tayties
« on: June 13, 2013, 09:26 »
I probably put my Kestrels out a bit early and they took a while to get going. The maincrops which I planted 2 weeks later even overtook them and showed well before them. Now the Kestrels are away. They've been in 11 weeks and look well healthy. However, some of them are over 3 feet tall and not showing signs of flowering yet. The mains all have flower heads showing. This morning one of them had even fallen over because of how tall it had got. Any idea why they are so tall?

Did you feed them with a nitrogen feed?

Unusually for me, I didn't use proper real manure in the tayty beds this year. I dug in some growmore a couple of weeks before planting out though. All the spuds got the same treatment, but only the kestrel have gone tall. It may be the shade thing. They do get less sun than the other tayty beds.

Cheers.

Shade does make them stretch their heads for the sun quite alarmingly. Kestrel are pretty bomb proof so will like as not still give you a crop  :)

Was pleased to see some flowers on mine today.  Dependable as ever, they are looking the best of the lot  :D
