To module, or not to module, that is the question.

I've just finished harvesting the broad beans. The bed (big raised one) is earmarked for tayties next year, so I'm trying some thing to utilise the bed until then. I've been and bought some Beetroot seed (Kestrel F1). I intend to set them off in modules before planting out. How long should I give them in the modules before transplanting out? My other choice is some spring cabbage (Greensleeves). It recommends planting between now and October, to harvest from January onwards. Again if I modulise them, how long before planting out? Final question: Do I leave the modules outside, or bring them on in the greenhouse.

Why modules?  They should be ok sowing direct.

I have been successionaly growing module Bolthardy beetroot all season. I am now planting out 3 to 4 weeks after sowing. By then they have a reasonable root system in the module and the transplant acts as the final thinning one would do if sown direct. My last batch were sown on 4/7, germinated on 9/7 and looking at them they will be in situ by the end of the week ... the weather is so good.

As soon as the cabbage have germinated I would put them outside in this heat in partial shade with a scrap bit of net over the tray. That's what I had to do with my Durham Early I am trying this year... the greenhouse was too hot.

the weather is going to be like this for  the next couple of weeks at least (famous last words)  so would suggest u just plant them out directly and save the time in transplanting

I was wanting to buy a bit of time to get the beds ready and let a bit of growmore loose on them for a couple of weeks before planting out. Especially the second bed which is still full of onions (but not for long).

Personally I would not module anything this time of year because they would dry out in a few hours even after giving them a good soak.
I would put them straight in the ground.

Hehe not really but I got to water the stuff I got in 3" pots twice a day, modules would be a nightmare.
