Potato Heights...
« on: June 10, 2013, 12:16 »
Afternoon All,

I planted my first earlies and maincrop on the same day, and my first earlies are about 2-3 foot high now, and starting to flower, and my maincrops are only about 6 inches high.....

Is this normal?

I know they are dug up at different times, I was just checking that the plants should look so different at this stage?
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

I have three black bins at home with mystery spuds . I concerntrated o the plot ones but these were left overs so in they went.

Anyway my home ones are over 3 foot whereas the plot ones are half that size if not less.  the ones at home look more like trees. No idea if its normal but the plant seems to know what ts doing more than i do, so i just let t get on.

The maincrops still have a lot of time to get growing - the earlies were bred to be ...........um, early  ;) so they get a move on!

Please can you come and give my earlies a good talking to MoS? Mine are smaller than either the charlottes or the maincrop. They are obviously malingering!

I find I get better results by talking nicely to them. Try saying 'please'.  :tongue2:

Strangely, my Charlottes are lagging behind my King Edwards even tho the Charlottes went in first

Odd, both my earlies and mains are flowering on the plot, both about three foot or so, the mains slightly smaller. The Charlottes, in black bins at home, are even taller, but with no flowers yet.

Trying not to look too smug, my spuds seem to be behaving themselves so far.   First and second earlies both went in on 7th April.  First earlies, Ulster Classic, are now quite tall (18" -2 ft) about to flower, second earlies, British Queen are around 9" shorter no flowers yet.   Had a furtle with the Ulster Classic, not ready yet.   Another 3-4 weeks for them I think.

The height of the foliage is largely dependent on the variety and they vary from very short to very tall.

My Foremost at 11 weeks are about 1 foot tall whereas the Red Cara at 8 weeks are at least double that.
