So planted out about 2 dozen sets of japanese onions last october. they are about 3" across now however the tops are still straight, need some advise as to how long before i pull them out or what should i look out for to indicate they are ready to be pulled. also when i pull them what do i do just pull and eat or pull and keep at the plot to dry before using any advise is apprecaited

they sound lovely, about like mine.  have any got a flower spike? if so, pull and eat them asap as they will not develop into proper onions, with the others wait till the foilage bends over, this should happen in the next few weeks. then pull and leave in the sun to dry for a few days then eat at your leisure, but they do not store as well as onions planted this year.

i am picking my ones with flower stalks and making sauces, soups etc with them.  They are still delicious

i had these planted and pulled one red and white because they had a flower tip, about 2 inches but the smell and taste was quite strong

the others star0ting to push through the soil and leaves starting to fall which I am sure is saying they are nearly ready

There's nothing to stop you eating them 'green' - just don't try to store them.
