Courgettes - hardening off
« on: June 07, 2013, 09:35 »
My Courgettes and Pumpkins have done well recently in my cold greenhouse.

I've only started putting them out during the day to get them hardened off - how long do I need to do this for before I can plant them in the ground?

Cheers
 :)

I'm just planting mine out now after about three days in the cold frame, it looks to be warm for the next few days.

Hi Geordie - I would normally let courgettes harden off for about 5 days (out during day and back in greenhouse at night) then provided that the weather is mild enough I leave them out day and night for a couple of days before planting out. This has usually worked OK for me.  :)

With all this sun we're having try not to expose them too much during the middle of the day - mine got sunburn and died!

Gosh! I've only just sown mine! They're going in after the garlic so I didn't want them too big too quickly. Hope they'll catch up!

Up here in the frozen north ;) we have to start early, it is such a short growing season.

I've got a few waiting to go in on the plot, but with this wind it's pointless - they'd be shredded in minutes  ::)

Started mine in a heated propagator middle of April, took them out when about 8 inches high ( its a big propagator) on the unheated greenhouse staging until 3rd week in May then final potting in 20litre pots and outside. Straight outside, no hardening off. I just never do hardening off and have never had a problem.
Its survival of the fittest. Dwarf French beans (slenderettes) went out beginning of May and are doing fine too.
