Carrot thinning
« on: June 09, 2013, 17:08 »
Has anyone ever tried not thinning carrots, just planting them in clumps and letting them push themselves apart like you can do onions? I'm not talking about big maincrop carrots, just little ones for eating as baby carrots.

I have not thinned mine in previous years because as you say they tend to push each other apart on light soil but last year I had a lot of small carrots and they were noticeably from clumps that were struggling against each other whereas carrots that had space around then grew much larger. So this year I have made a special attempt to sow thinly, too thinly by the number of gaps in the rows so I've very carefully transplanted a few into the gaps and they seem to have taken. So in answer to your question it depends on what size of carrot you are aiming for, young or old.

As long as the seed is not sown like mustard and cress, the carrots manage just fine without any thinning as far as I can see  8)

I broadcast sow early Nantes and they get on just fine by pushing themselves apart.  I did the same last year with Autumn Kings and, though small, they got on fine.  Autumn Kings are struggling to come through this year.
