French beans closing
« on: June 05, 2013, 13:14 »
Why do my French bean leaves seem to close during the hottest part of the day, it's almost like flowers opening and closing. They re-open again later.

They are trying to conserve moisture, by reducing surface area. it happens when the roots haven't grown big enough to take up enough water to supply the leaves. They're usually ok later in the year......either that or they could do with a good watering  ::)

I seem to be watering constantly, I have moved them into the shade give them an hour off.  I have never seen it before, it reminded me of a Venus fly trap.

They are only at two leaf stage but big leaves, should I put them out now. If they need out that's fine they can be evicted tonight

perhaps a tad too soon - mine went out like that but they're protected in the garden - 'up the hill' sounds as if it would be windy  That might just be the death of them

These plants are too fussy for my liking, no idea why they dont like too much sun, too much shade, too much rain, too cold, too frosty. They are just like men.

Aha, I've been wondering about mine doing the same for ages now! I keep asking people and no-one seems to know whether they're meant to open and close, or not.
Glad to know someone else's are too  :) I've sown 3 batches so far and they all seem to do that at some stage during the day...
Maybe I should water more then!
(Mine are Dwarf French Beans)

Mine haven't germinated yet.  How long should it take outside?  They have been in for 2 weeks now and no sign at all.  Should I give up and sow more?
