Don't forget that a liquid manure does a good job as well!

I have to ask because I don't know when people say a liquid manure do they mean comfrey tea or nettle tea.
I wasn't going to ask but I am unsure

Comfrey and nettle tea are great natural fertilsers, BQ.

We soak the equivalent of a plastic bread bag with a few holes jabbed into it, full of manure, or 6X concentrated fertiliser in a barrel of water, preferably hanging it from the side so you can pull it out after a week or so!

Mix some of that with your watering routine, and you'll do your plants a lot of good, but it may well pong quite a bit as well, so make a list of friends first, and advise them..;0)

Let me know if you want more detail; the doors always open!

Thanks for that, I must look a right twit sometimes, hubby would say all the time but we'll agree to disagree on that. Does the Manure need to be well rotted or fresh

There's lots of comfrey on my allotment. Do I have to make a liquid feed or can i just bury it or make a mulch with it? This may be another very naive question but I'm sure you're all getting used to them from me by now  ;)

:D I've been reading 'John's book' for years and only just noticed the link to this website today!  Now who is the stupid one BQ?

So.... if I put manure-y water on my lettuces/rocket/mizuna I'm not sure I'll fancy eating them even after they've been washed  ??? but will try that for beans and pumpkins & stuff

One of our old boys says you should never water a lettuce on the leaves. Is that not true then?

It's the soil that needs watering with the organic stinky stuff, not the lettuces  :nowink:

I always water around the lettuce so I'm okay then, never sure to trust the old boys, they always have a naughty twinkle in their eyes

I reckon well rotted BQ, as the ammonia is more prevalent in fresh.

I've banged on for years about the 6X soaked stuff, even forgetting about it when we were in the wilderness years, but it does make life easier, just to use that, some nettle tea and comfrey tea, with whatever rainwater is available.

For many crops (well, except carrots, parsnips etc...) I use a mix of chicken manure pellets and general fertiliser, sprinkled around the crops and gently hoed in and well watered every 6 weeks or so while they are growing. Certainly works wonders for the brassicas and the alliums each year.
