Moving herbs from ground to pot
« on: June 03, 2013, 08:09 »
We have a square foot herb bed but they have become unruly and messy. I have decided we need the space more for other stuff so wondered if I could transfer to pots to control them more.

What sort of pot would be good, I'd like something like the strawberry stackers that don't take up huge amounts of room.

Will they sulk, we have basil, mint, sage, more mint, chives, rosemary, errrm forgotten what the rest are. ( we don't use many herbs)  :blush:

The bay tree will have to stay in the middle as it's taken off but we could plant around this.

The mint needs to go in a pot on its own or it will take over. In theory they should like a strawberry planter as they need good drainage & warmth as most are Mediterranean plants. Basil I would pot individually as as soon as it gets cold it will die,I grow mine around the tomato plants in the greenhouse or on the kitchen window ledge. What about a collection of terracotta pots,I've just planted 4 types of mint to compliment my herb bed-try & use more you need less salt then.

Oh I feel another trip to poundland coming on. I am dreading digging out the mint, it was originally in a raised pot and sent runners up and out of the ground. Like something from a horror movie.

The mint invasion  ::)

What are you planning to put round the bay tree in place of the herbs?

If an annual plant / veg etc, make sure it doesn't damage the roots when you harvest or remove it.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Not sure yet. I was thinking beetroot, spring onions. Maybe lettuce.
