« on: June 05, 2013, 10:48 »
I am wanting to find out how big  peoples plots are on here and what you use the space for.

Mine if 30ft by 90ft, and i currently have my first crop of weeds in full bloom.

What does everyone else have?

what you use the space for.

What exactly do you want to know?
do you mean which crops we grow? How it's divided up into beds etc.

Errmmmm not sure on size but we have 23 defined beds on plot 65
Laid as follows.
3 beds of gooseberries
2 sloe beds.
4 raspberry beds
3 blackcurrant beds
2 redcurrant beds
2 strawberry beds
2 alpine strawberry beds
1 tayberry bed.
1 blueberry bed
1 pear tree in a small bed
1 comfrey bed, small bed
1 bed has a small pond

Our beds are 8 foot by 3. A couple 8 by 4 and some 4 by 4 the comfrey and pond bed.

Most beds house two large bushes like blackcurrant, three tayberries, etc etc

Plot 66
Has 25 defined beds.
Planted as follows.

1 rhubarb bed
1 asparagus bed
4 potato beds
3 strawberry beds
2 pea beds
2 runner bean beds.
2 courgette beds
1 beetroot bed
1 broad bean bed
1 goji bed, small bed
2 sweetcorn
1 French bean bed
1 herb bed
1 carrot bed
1 marrow bed
1 butternut and pumpkin bed, largest bed on the plot.
Also corner tree, plum I think with sprouts underneath plus onions, not ideal but needs must.

Dads plot 67
So far has raspberries
Runner beans
Gooseberries.
Tonight will have tomatoes
More French beans

To come on plot 67
Different squash
Cabbage red and green.
And lots more if they grow well.

We don't seem to do as much variety as some people but it's what we eat

Oh I forgot along the sides of my peas on 66 we also have turnips and outdoor lettuce.

I meant how you proportion your plot, sheds, crops, coops, etc..

Always room for more lol.

Sometimes on here I think "we don't grow that or that or that" and then I feel like a fake but we grow what gets used.

I am always looking for something new to squeeze in.

I actually forgot some bits on dads, loganberry, japenese wineberry and for the life of me I can't remember the other.

We do grow some extras at home too, more spuds, carrots, onions, shallots, blackcurrants, pears, apples, plums, sloes more rhubarb. We do also have the smallest garden on the planet so it's full to say the least.

Forgot two kiwis and a grape vine and two thornless blackberries, new this year.

At school did you ever do a comp for the most things in a matchbox, I won it, that's what my garden is like

Not all sites will let you plant fruit trees in your plot, so check before buying anything.

One site near us has a designated orchard area, where each plot holder can plant up to 2 trees. There are a few benches in there, and it is a lovely place to eat your sandwiches in between weeding.
Breaking new ground.............literally!

I will have 12 beds, 10 are 3.6-4m x 1.2m, one is 4.5m x 1m and one is 9m x 1m. Both the latter are fruit and one of the other 10 might go that way too...
.
I have a 2mx2m corner shed, space for a 8ftx6ft greenhouse and waterbutts/compost bins

On the edges I have/will have 4 trained fruit trees, plus a couple of mini trees in the fruit beds.

Total area approx 135sqm.

I didn't ask but others had trees so I went for it. The pear is a stick variety all grows on one branch. The plum I think it is, can't remember what went where is at the back of the plot so doesn't interfere with anyone else's plot as we are the side allotments. Also under my pear is a mountain cranberry, it's meant to be a ground crawler so thought it would help keep weeds at bay. It's great if small so another ten of them would probably fill the small bed.

Our plot is 30ft by 90ft - we've dedicated the first 4 metres to a shed, polytunnel, compost bins, cold frame, water butts, flowers and a herb bed. The rest is taken up with 18 beds and a grassed area for the kids to play on.

We've packed ours with stuff and I reckon as the next few years go by, we'll be able to make a lot more of what we've got seeing as this is our first year.

I think i would be fine to plant the trees as everyone in the area has 8 foot fences and does what they like.

We're allowed dwarf fruit trees but you have to be civilised and not put them where they might shade anothers' plot. :)
