I have two beefsteak plants which have stopped producing a growing tip and thrown up a larger than normal single flower instead. What's happening here?  Shall I pinch it off and allow a side shoot to grow in its place?

The same thing has happened to one of my plants (a Black Russian tomato if I remember correctly), look forward to finding out what to do!
