Furry chicken poo
« on: June 01, 2013, 19:51 »
Hi, am fairly new to chicken keeping, got our hens in January. For the past month or so droppings have become furry after only a week. Is this just to do with milder weather or is it something more sinister?

I think you need to poo pick more frequently than once a week.  I would do it every day.

You definitely don't want mould spores near your hens so best to clean them up more frequently.

If it is in the coop you are talking about you may also need to take a look at your ventilation.   ;)

We poop scoop the coop daily - well most of us do ::)
If it is missed one day, it'll be done the next ;)

We then do a full clean weekly on Sundays

I do my coop once a week. I completely change it, and do the nesting box every day. Otherwise, the run has a weekly pick, of the most obvious poo, otherwise I hose it down with the pressure washer. They are on a gravel run, with a smaller run within that od soil and grass ( in separete runs I can let them in and out of). They have a big area of 12 by 15 foot for 4 birds, so it doesn't tend to get that bad. They plop in the same places, I just dig it out once  a week.

As mine only go into the "inner" run and coop for bed, the poop tends to be minimal. When I had a smaller run the "furry" poo would happen. It's not furry for long.  Either just pick it up or if you can, give a bigger space.

Well....this time of year my horses droppings in the field have always grown a furry or orangey fungus....only occurs around this time of year and occurs within days of  them dropping them, I wonder if it is a similar thing......warmer and wet conditions maybe?
