sowing seed in gutter lengths
« on: June 04, 2013, 23:16 »
I have trouble at my allotment getting seed started as clay based soil soon forms impenetrable crust for small seedlings.

Anybody tried sowing in lengths of gutter with compost to start them off before transplanting?

I've not tried guttering but I have dug a small groove across the bed, filled that with multi-purpose compost or similar and sown into that. It seems to have worked fine so far.

I've used guttering to start off peas and it works well, I even have gutter brackets attached to the window pillars of my wooden greenhouse, so I can put them up out of the way and free up bench space.
