I have some basil and coriander that I grew from seed in the kitchen window. They have developed very unhealthy scrappy grey-white patches all over the leaves. Some of the basil have shrivelled and gone wispy. Not only am I cursed with damping off disease I now have this 

Does anyone know what it could be ?

Might be mildew but don't want to diagnose without seeing it.

No, it's not mildew as I know what that looks like. Isn't a mould, it's embedded in the leaf.

did the leaves get splashed and then get strong sunlight on them?

I think they possibly did as they are in the kitchen window where the light comes in strong early on. I now water from the tray underneath them.
