Mulching Squash
« on: May 30, 2013, 19:48 »
I planted my squash today (butternut and pumpkins) and I plan to mulch them with bark but do I mulch straight away or wait?

mulch when you want, but don't let it touch the stem cos they can easily rot at the neck.

Put some blood fish and bone, growmore or chicken manure pellets down first as the mulch may rob nitrogen from the soil as it rots down.

We covered our ones with fleece after they looked rough, lifted the end today to a lovely looking plant with lots of new growth so very happy. Keeping it in the fleece tent for as long as possible.

My squashes are still in their pots but now hardening off in my backyard ready for planting out.

My compost mounds are ready for them though and planting into these will keep the watering and weeding down.

I wait until my plants are just large enough that they won't get lost in the thick mulch and then spread it around, not touching the actual stalks.

Devonbarmygardener, I thought they were going in tomorrow  :D  :tongue2:
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

Never put off tomorrow what you can do today. Isn't that right or is it the other way around  :D
