Bubble wrap disaster!
« on: May 31, 2013, 10:10 »
I spent a fair while bubble wrapping my 8' X 6' greenhouse and stood back and praised myself as I was really pleased with the job. It was tricky doing the corners even though I had bought the corner clips and also used the extended clips for the uprights as they said this would reduce condensation. I fiddled to get the roof done and cut around the opening windows, cutting special bits for the triangles of glass at either end of the greenhouse.
I used silver tape to hold everything secure (in some cases using the aluminium bars to stick it to and in other cases, bubble wrap-to-bubble wrap) as the clips didn't seem to want to work in some places.
Imagine my horror when, after a few days, the tape seemed to peel off  and down came the bubble wrap!!  :(  >:(

It is the area in the corners where the triangular end bits of glass meet the roof and where the roof meets the upright sides of the greenhouse is the problem.

Anyone got any ideas how I can sort this as I want to get the cucumbers in their final place this weekend and as soon as they start go grow I wont be able to get into the corners of the greenhouse anymore.

Do I need to bubble wrap the roof area at all? I guess I do as that is where the sun will be at its brightest and that is what I am trying to shade the cucumbers from.
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

would those flat plastic cable ties slide between the glass and  the aluminium frame ?

they might work if you then puncture through the bubble wrap and pull tight

are you lining the inside or outside ?

I've not long taken my bubble wrap off for the summer.

I'll be renewing the shading, (diluted emulsion paint), on the sunny side & roof soon.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

You are joking DD. I thought the bubble wrap was meant to be a good idea for shading? Mind you it is meant to insulate so could end up hotter then without it.
Does the emulsion come off easily? My OH bought me a pack of the proprietary glass shading and I am wary of using it as not sure how easily it is to remove.

It can do both, but mine gets a bit tatty looking in summer and also it drapes over the wire mesh that I let my cucumbers run up.

The proprietary stuff is fine and should be fairly easy to remove, I'm tight and used stuff I had laying around.

I see bubble wrap as a Winter thing only and then it's nothing that covering the plants with a secondary fleece or whatever wouldn't achieve.
I only built my allotment greenhouse a couple of years ago, and extended it this year. I used the 4mm twin wall polycarbonate, so maybe that takes out some of the temperature extremes that glass houses suffer from.
On that subject, I have left my greenhouse door open for the first time tonight... it feels like proper Summer... the cat agrees, she's over the moon and in her element .. I won't see her tonight now.
