To catch a gooseberry sawfly caterpillar
« on: May 28, 2013, 18:48 »
I found a novel way of exposing the dreaded sawfly caterpillar. First you need black soil or some kind of black covering around the base of the plant, then somewhere near the base of the plant grip firmly  and give it a good shake, the little blighter fall out of the bush and are visible against the black background.

After a squishing time, repeat 3 or 4 times until no more fall out, repeat  daily if you can and look forward to goosegog pie in the autumn.

Very useful, thanks Amilo.  I'm keeping a beady eye out as I did have them last year (amazing how much damage the little blighters can cause in such a short space of time) so I'm ready for them.... :)
