Feline 'Gentlemen Callers'
« on: June 05, 2013, 16:23 »
Now I know I could google this but would probably get a million different wrong answers and get myself all worried, so I'm asking here instead.  For the last week we have had a cat that I've never seen before coming around and yowling.  I guessed it was a Tom and last night managed to get close enough to see that, yes, he is a fully 'intact' male.  I spoke to one of my neighbours today who has a young cat that he rarely lets out.  I checked with him and his cat has not been neutered.  So I'm guessing the Tom is coming round 'calling' for the little girly cat!  The poor thing is completely   .  He's just come back again now - crying and yowling his head off!  She's driving him insane and my cat is not helping by rolling around in front of him, showing him her lovely belly and scampering across the grass on her belly towards him.  She is a floozy, but is neutered!

How long does a female cat stay 'in season'? Is that how it works?  How far will a Tom travel to pay a visit to a ladyfriend?  Because now I'm worried that because I've never seen this cat before, he is lost  :(.  I don't want to start feeding him if he belongs to someone else, obviously.  So I was wondering how long this could go on for?  So I know when I can launch into full 'worry mode' rather than the general state of anxiety I am in now about the poor boy

Up to 10 days - but if the she-cat doesn't get pregnant she can be back in season again within a week or 2  :(

Wah!  I don't think the girly cats owner has any intention of getting her 'done'.  He likes a drop of the old 'falling down' water (as do I, but not QUITE as much as him  ;)) so the conversation got a bit strange, to say the least!   This poor boy could be here forever, yowling his head off, with my cat tormenting him and the object of his desire 'meowing' at the window to him.  I really hope the she-cats owner doesn't let her out though, and she gets preggers.  There is no way her owner would be able to cope with kittens.  Now I'm worried about that  :(.

Have a word with your local Cat's Protection League - they might have a word with him  ;)

I think it is normal for your cat to behave the way she is for around a year after being neutered.  That was the information I was given many years ago by the RSPCA.  I hope things settle down as it will probably keep you awake all night with its yowling.

I may do that, thanks.  I was pondering whether I may 'nab' one of the support workers who go into him and see if they can sort it out for him x

He is, but he sounds soooooo upset and in utter despair that it's difficult to be cross with him .  He keeps coming back all through the day and night!  We have a little Jack Russell and the sound of the cat yowling is driving her berserk .  Happy days!  My cat was neutered about 3 years ago.  Any flirting she is doing is because she is naughty.  I've only just got her back, after going missing for two and a half months, in a dramatic police rescue .  Whole other thread there  :nowink:.......

I agree with Mum.   :)  I'm sure CPL would  be more than happy to get him sorted out if his owner agrees.  Not everyone will have had their femails spayed... :nowink:

Very bad not to get kitties 'done'.  You can't even speak to a human if you ring the RSCPA regarding a cat that is stray/found, the problem is that bad. :(.  Anyway, I think I will try and speak to his support worker and see if they can sort something out and go from there.  I have to do something - he's back again now, completely at the mercy of his hormones  bless him.  He's a fine looking boy too.  Though don't tell OH I said that  we've already had an argument/discussion about what we might do if the boy cat is a stray!

I'm not sure, actually, whether I would be able to post about the rescue of my cat.  I think I would have to give too many details to tell the tale,  she had to rescued from someone with learning difficulties, and I wouldn't want to cause any upset.  The Police did have my cat in the Police Station for a while, they took photos of her and were going to put something in a newsletter!  I'll see what I can find out.  I have PLENTY PLENTY other stories I can post though.  You know its bad when people say 'is that your cat?.....' and I have to try and discern by their face and tone which way the conversation is going to go!  I'll try and get some pics up too.  She is one of my gorgeous furbabies and I love her

We can't afford to get our female cat spayed and she's been yowling with all her heats for the past year and a half and shows no sign of stopping   :( Her heats last about 10 days and are roughly 2 months apart, sometimes a lot less

Not sure how your male visitor knows the female is in heat but he'll hang around until she comes out and then he'll go back home. My neutered male dog used to run off for a few days hoping to win the affections of some local female dog in heat but came back after a few days of spurning.

We had a couple of female cats near us who weren't spayed and when they were in heat the unneutered toms from all around the village turned up and followed them. It was horrible as they wandered around in the road. The owners of the females didn't care. They won't spay their cats as it is "natural". They appear to have moved on but goodness knows how many kittens those cats have produced.

I work for an animal charity, please please please get your cats neutered. In the UK the cats protection give vouchers for people on benefits to put towards neutering, so do the RSPCA and if you are on benefits the PDSA can not only help with neutering, but they will register your pet for all ailments it might have subject to your eligibility. there really is no excuse for not neutering, it is the basic thing you need to get done when you take on any cat.  Thousands of kittens are euthanized every year in the UK simply because there are not enough homes, and the sanctuaries are full and refusing animals because they are at bursting point.  Tom cats can smell females on heat a mile away, so if you have an un neutered female and a Tom that wont go away, then get your female neutered or you will be asking for trouble.

That was what 'did it for me' when I catnapped my cat.  She's been left by her owners who'd left the country.  By all accounts they'd left her with a neighbour to take care of her of her.  They didn't.  Wouldn't let her in or feed her.  And she wasn't spayed.  The final straw was when she spent the whole day hiding in some bushes surrounded by 5 tomcats - they wouldn't let her out.  So I took her home, got her 'done' and microchipped and she's been a much loved fur baby ever since (about 3 years ago).

I'm still trying to get my neighbour to get his cat spayed.  The tom cat has been around but not yowling for hours on end like he was before.  I'm afraid I did a VERY BAD THING and fed him.  I know, I know, its naughty.  So he does arrive at about 6.30pm and 'call' for his bowl of food.  I'm not sure that he's not a stray.  I can't believe that someone would want to have an unneutered male cat if for no other reason than the 'spraying'
