sweet corn - rootbound?
« on: May 29, 2013, 15:00 »
Got some sweet corn still in pots in the greenhouse almost half a metre tall now! still looks fairly healthy,

intending to plant out this weekend after some hardening off

lesson learned for the future (plant later!) but do you think it will be OK or too rootbound?

I don't know if mine is (probably, it's been in toiletroll tubes for a month!), but what happens if it is? Does it just not grow?

I can't find anything anywhere, other than mutterings of 'don't let it get rootbound'...

There are no weather disasters forecast for the next 10 days in the South of England, and certainly no frosts, not even any more high winds. In fact, let's be honest, the forecast is looking reasonable, almost Summery, considering what we've had for 18 months. I would plant out asap. Harden off for a day or two if that's your thing, but it's looking like a reasonable week, and it's the time of year where delay is probably worse than hardening off.

I planted my sweetcorn 3 or 4 days ago, and it didn't half like the proper rain it received as opposed to my synthesised watering. It's shot up 2 inches in two days despite the shock of transplanting.

yeah I want to get them out asap, but I put them out on a windy day recently and some stalks blew over so they're kind of still recovering from that so I'm being gentle with them.

Its a delicate balance!

am having similar issues, mine is in pots and close to half a metre tall! Guess you don't really know all you can do is plant it out and hope it isn't.

Get them in, but be careful how you plant them out, so you don't break any roots, and plant them a little deeper as they can grow extra roots from the stem in the same way that tomatoes do.
I'm sure they'll be fine.
It may be worth staking the ones that have already grown tall, so they can't get blown over if it turns windy, as they won't have much holding them in the soil.
