Sulking Butternut Squash
« on: May 23, 2013, 14:38 »
I haven't planted mine out yet. They're in small pots in the polytunnel ready and waiting for more settled weather so I can plant them outside. Last night the temperature in there fell to 3C and now they look wilted and sulking. Are they likely to recover or should I just bite the bullet and sow afresh?

Mine had to go out, they stopped developing in the pot I the cold frame, so they are outside and coping, well they were not sure how they enjoyed the hail.

Put them out in a cloche that is not exposed to the wind.....

A couple of days, in a non windy enviroment and a decent root run, and hopefully they'll respond....
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

I've got all kinds of squash and pumpkins on the go but the butternuts have not germinated at all. I'm on my second sowing now. ::)

I've kept my squash plants under individual cloches as they prefer it steadily warm. Often they'll recover so just check regularly for fresh growth. If you're unsure about revival, start a few seeds now, just in case.

All my squashes are still in pots in the greenhouse and they'll stay there until things improve. Possibility of a slight frost tonight and tomorrow so I'm not risking it. Courgettes outside have been battered by the wind but they are still alive...I hope!
