Pear Tree not flowering.
« on: May 16, 2013, 12:47 »
We planted a pear tree (Pyrus Communis Concorde) at the top of our garden about 3-4 years ago and the first year we had a few pears the second year there were over 60 fruits set but most fell off and we ended up with about 15 pears last year we had no fruits even though it blossomed a little and this year we have loads of leaves but not one flower.
Can anyone tell me why there are no flowers please.

Things are a lot later this year, don't panic yet.

Did you feed it, and what does it have round its base (e.g. grass)?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

It has grass with chives around the base we were going to cut a circle of grass out around the base and add grow more to the soil but with the weather we hadn't got round to it. Is it too late to do that now do you think?

As our apple tree has blossoms and the pear tree I thought blossomed the same time is was a bit worried. ::)

It's not too late to sow chives - it's not like you are sowing onions for bulbs where timing is more critical.

Pear trees take a bit longer to establish than apple so you can expect years where this is no or few fruit - 2011 was dry and mild, so a lot of the blossom would have been out when the insects were around.  2012 on the other hand was cold followed by rain so not a good year for anyone.  Interesting that yours do not have flowers this year as mine are also a lot on the low side, but then I was a bit brutal with the loppers and put it down to cutting back the branches which might have had blossom.

Things are a lot later this year, don't panic yet.

As I live in the same area, I'm afraid the blossom are now on their way out so unlikely they will come on later  :(  Good point about feeding - it's possible the nutrients in the soil might have been diluted out, and don't forget potash is good for flowering plants so will build them up for next year.

I am not too far away from you eiither. My neighbour's three pear trees hve been flowering profusely for the last week and are just losing their blossom, so it is possibly not too late. Those same trees did not produce a single pear last year and they are usually heavily laden.

Ours has lost all its blossom now so hoping some fruit will set :)
We've got our fruit trees in the rabbit runs so they get fertilised all the time :)

Strangely enough, I've got the same problem with my young pear tree this year. Mine is also about 4 years old, a Beurre Hardy. My cherry and apple trees are all flowering well, and so is my older pear tree, but the BH doesn't have a single flower on it.

I haven't had a single blossom on either my cherry or my pear and my neighbours apples haven't had any yet either and they are older established trees.  We are very late here so I am not panicking yet.

My blueberries are only just starting to flower and the Japanese Acer only just unfurling its leaves - I reckon most plants are around 4-6 weeks later here this year than on average.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I have had a "family Pear" conference x buer louise for five years and have not had a single flower on it in all that time. After reading RHS book Pruning & Training I have this spring resorted  to ring barking it . Fingers crossed this will shock it into flowering next year. As for waiting to see if a pear is going to flower it is very easy to tell the difference between flower and leaf buds, the flower buds are much bigger and fatter.
