fertiliser for onions
« on: May 08, 2013, 17:32 »
I have looked and looked but get conflicting advise or generalisations, so - what fertiliser for onion?  I have chicken pellets and blood, bone and fish at the moment.  Will any of them do or do I need to get something else.  Please can you be specific as you are dealing with someone who understands things like "get xyz" if you say " get a nitrogen rich fertiliser" I won't know which one to get without going to the garden centre and reading all the packs, which I don't have time for

Perhaps the generalisations were about using a general fertiliser?  ::)

Both of those you already have are general fertilisers - some people swear by extra potash but like most plants onions are happy as long as they've got a bit of everything.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I tend to use chicken manure pellets & although the pictures below are of my kelsae in 2011 I think it does just fine

I find that a watering in of sulphate of potash gives a good strong root system and seems to reduce the chances of rust etc.

I daresay others have other routes to success of course  ;)

Ah Onions, apart from Calabrese looking like a flower, I just can't get my onions to any decent size..

Potash I think I'll try in the watering can.

If I dont get any decent ones this year I'll prob give up on them..
