Do you have a favourite patch of soil on your allotment ?

Serious question. While I understand this might not affect so much those with river bed allotments, when I took over the side of a hill plot, I quickly found that the topsoil in places was only a foot or so deep over the inconsistent striated slate bed. Years of other souls tilling the plot and using different methods of clearing and manuring/composting seems to have left some parts to die for, where other parts are shall we say probably only suitable for herbs and quick salad crops. My best crops last year where situated on the "sweet spots".
I wonder if anyone else inherited such inconsistencies and did you correct them with a modicum of success ?

No "sweet spot", my garden is one great "sandy spot" - some of it has had more hard work (and compost, and even some clay) put into it.

Nevertheless I'd still rather have that than really heavy clay (I think! )

Some areas are much sunnier and more sheltered than others, so it's a question of learning what you can plant where and how best to improve the soil accordingly.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Not so much a favourite but a better cultivated part. The bloke before me had a stroke and so only worked the first few feet of bed. Mind you he did leave a huge five year old copost heap to sweeten up the rest of the plot.

I have a sunny spot, a shadier spot, a hilly bit, a flatter bit, a stoney bit, a drier soil area but all in all it's a good mix and everything seems to cope. So I am happy with my dolly mixture plot.  :D

I have a nice warm sheltered bit - fantastic for early salads - but for some reason, that's about all that will grow there. Leeks, not very good, strawberries ditto, sweetcorn, the same - see what I mean :nowink: I've added more manure but it doesn't seem to help.

It's a puzzle

What a fascinating question, too early to tell for me, although I do like the hilly corner bit of mine, it's just a feeling  :)
first there is a mountain then there is no mountain then there is

I've got a bed I dislike - the Swampy Bed of Doom, where plants go to die. For some reason it doesn't drain.

This year I've dug a trench next to it and it's being double dug. I won't be beaten.  :)
