water for hens
« on: May 01, 2013, 12:04 »
Can anyone help me to find out if allotment providers have to supply mains water for livestock. We keep chicken and for the last year our water has been off due to leakages and heavy water bills. They are now considering putting in a new system. I just wanted to know where the law stand re live stock and water supply.
Many thanks

Is it in your plot t and cs, no livestock allowed on ours at all. Yet the council seem happy to let mr badger stay, enough said on that (ggggrrrrr) yes I know they have rights. Sorry off topic.

I'm not sure of the answer, but if you had poultry in your garden you wouldn't necessarily pipe fresh water to them, would you? You would more likely transport it somehow in containers to their drinkers. I think the same may be the case on an allotment.

I think that would only apply if you were DEFRA registered and you don't need to do that unless you have 50 birds.  You can register voluntarily of course and then you would have to abide by their rules.

Given that I'm not the only one with chickens there are others and the collective would be more than 50 birds, I would have thought that there would be some legislation about the welfare of the these birds..

I wouldn't pipe water into the back garden for the birds because it wouldn't be necessary.. given the distance from the kitchen door, that is not the issue.

I think the 50 birds refers to one owner rather than a collective but you would need to contact DEFRA to be sure about your situation.   ;)

Allotment rules say they have to be clean, fed and watered etc etc - but it doesn't say that the Council have to supply the water..........I think it's your responsibility.

It can't be that hard to take some down each time you visit.

Mole valley farmers down here do a fab water carrier with lid. We used to take it camping. Each morning you visit just fill one of those  :D

Just to confirm that there is nothing in the various allotments laws to place a duty on the council to provide running water for any reason.

Private landowners are not covered by any legislation at all.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
