Kohl rabi
« on: May 04, 2013, 12:30 »
Afternoon all. I have decided this year to grow some things I have not grown before. The first ring kohl rabi. Bought some seedlings from the garden centre last week, still very small so not put them out yet. Has anybody ever grown it before? If so, does it have any specific requirements?

Just bung 'em in the ground, very forgiving plant.  I pulled the last of mine up this spring, still very crisp and great grated on salads, also tastes good in stews.

Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Remember that they are part of the cabbage family

Mine had caterpillar damage to the leaves last year

So this year I shall net them

Definitely net them - pigeons like them too. They shredded mine last year, then the slugs moved in.

The 3 we had (of 8) were really tasty. So much so I've got about 20 seedlings at home...

when the root gets to about 4 inches in diameter. More than that and it might go woody.

You can eat the leaves too - treat them like young greens.

Fantastic crop!

We'll grow them in succession this year.

Looking forward to trying them now. Tried artichokes (the underground ones) and didn't like them at all. Other half didn't like me much after I had eaten them either
