When to plant out brassicas
« on: April 28, 2013, 20:14 »
Growing a number of brassica seedlings in the greenhouse at night but outside all day.  Some are smaller than others but some are 4 leaves.  I have grown sprouts, cabbage, broccoli and purple broccoli.   Given the still cold weather would it be best to keep them growing in warmer conditions than plant them out.  I was thinking in 3 weeks they will be much stronger plants to with stand the wind etc.

I planted my calabrese this morning if that's any help, they had about 4 leaves each.

They may suffer if the greenhouse heats up during the day as they don't like heat. Mine are in the coldframe but the glass has been removed and replaced with debris netting. They are coming on nicely. I intend planting out in about two weeks.

Some of my kale plants are out in a sheltered spot. Some are under a pop bottle. I'll be planting my cabbages out next weekend - probably under a bit of fleece until it warms up a bit. No idea whether this is the best thing to do.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I am not sure whereabouts in the country you are chickpeacurry. Could you add your locality to your profile perhaps, as then it will help answer your question more accurately  :) ?

Brassicas of the right size, 4th leaf forming and bigger, should be safe to plant out now. I don't think we will be getting any prolonged really cold spells now.
