Concerned for my poorly hen
« on: April 11, 2013, 14:27 »
Hi I have a poorly hen. She has been unwell for 2 weeks now she keeps stretching her neck up high then  to the side and down as though something is stuck. She is not moving very quick and when they are in the the garden she is always trailing behind the other 3 she does scratch around eat and drink but not how she used to and not like the other 3 do she will also have a little sit down at times. I have massaged her croup and tipped her upside down so she was sick there is also no bad smell from the beak. Has anyone got any other idea's of what could be wrong. Also her comb is not a bright colour and is very short and pale they have been wormed and checked for unwanted guests. Thank you

does her crop appear flat in the morning or is it still full? When was she last wormed and what with?
Staffies are softer than you think.

I would say full as there is no real change in her from one morning to the next and she looks puffed up. They was wormed at the end of march with flubenvet.

She may have impacted crop or sour crop.  Have a look here for details on both conditions

I hope she is a lot better.
Make sure they have access to grit and oyster shell even if free ranging. Do not give them any cut grass.

They do have grit and oyster shell.  I gave her a warm bath today and she loved it
Then I massaged the crupe and that has seemed to help alot and have noticed she
Had started to move more freely and the bulge in her chest has gone down quite
Considerably I will check in the morning and will massage again if needed.  Fingers crossed
She is going to be ok.  Thank you will let you know.

You could try giving her a few drops of olive oil to lubricate any blockage and help it go down more easily :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!
