A rat is no duck ;)  Most small  animal vets are familiar with small rodents just a bit futery (das this word actually exist or is it just local slang?), but just not with poultry..

he offered to do it more from curiousity - it was something he hadn't done while in practise...we were his only rat owning customers

I haven't actually asked them yet but they (Tesco, so be warned anyone thinking of insuring an animal with them to read the small print) only insure each illness for a year.  My cat has diabetes and kidney disease so his insurance on both those things has run out, they now charge me a £40 excess and I pay £24 a month insurance, no-one else would insure him now so I'm stuffed basically.  My last bill was £360 but my vet is very good at word manipulation (and I shall say no more publicly about that  ) so they paid up nearly £300.  She wants him to have a test for his heart, and I can't remember right now if it was an ultrasound or something else, my brain's fried tonight, anyway it's several hundred pounds, he has a heart murmur, he's 17, if I don't get it checked out they can't treat it, but there's no guarantee they can treat it anyway, to be honest it's not about the money, I'd flex the plastic if I decide it's worth it, I'm just not sure about stressing him out, on the other hand I don't want him to be ill if it can be treated.  You never know here whether they're offering all these treatments and tests for the animal's benefit or for their purse.  He has to go back for another check up soon so I'll decide them what to do.  There are treatments available for cats that NHS humans can't get, which is insane.

masha he is gorgeous!!

gosh that's awful about the insurance though; i bet they hid that well away in the teeny tiny small print on the form -- it's crazy.

To be honest I didn't read it, a friend recommended Tesco, and I didn't think there was any difference, insurance is insurance etc., how wrong I was!  By the time I realised he was "maturing" and no-one else would insure him.  But then insurance isn't supposed to pay out is it, actually I've had my moneys worth I suppose over the years, it's just unfortunately that the illnesses he's got have both lasted more than a year
