Harvesting blanket weed for feed
« on: April 05, 2013, 20:51 »
I have a theory, just a theory. Looking at how nature works, I know that seaweed is fantastic for plants. As blanket weed probably has some of the same properties as seaweed, why not dry it and crush to powder and use a feed/spray ? Surely it won't do any harm.

Although blanket weed and seaweed are both algae one of the reasons seaweed is so good for plants is that it contains far more trace elements than most things growing on land (or pond water).

Could you harvest enough blanket weed to make a useful amount of fertilizer and would it be any better than other stuff which is much easier to collect?

Would you just use the blanket weed from your pond before you get it under control or actively encourage it in your pond.

I would just add it to the compost heap.

Yes, I am removing it from the pond and may as well make use of it.

I have heard of two uses - dry it and use instead of moss in lining hanging baskets and as I do just throw it to the ducks -- they love it.

It takes at least a month, after you put it in as it is when it starts to rot down it begins to work on the blanket weed then it will depend on quantities of weed & barley, try putting it in now when you have harvested the weed
