Growing sorrel
« on: April 02, 2013, 12:42 »
I bought a 2 sorrel plants a couple of years ago. One green leafed and one was red. The green one seems to be growing ok but the red leafed has tiny, miniature leaves that never really get going. Again, this spring it's still tiny with hardly any growth. I noticed also that it attracts whitefly quite a lot in the summer. It was much better than this when I first bought it.

I love sorrel!  I had a clump growing in a pot but the pot has broken so I broke the pot to get at it and then bunged the whole thing in the ground this afternoon.  They are very hardy and never seem to quit so you should be ok Hub  :D

They always have some tender little leaves growing somewhere on the stem and these are gourmet leaves for your salad bowl. Very lemony  :)

The green ones are more prolific and very hardy.

The leaves are also really lovely mixed in some tartare sauce for fish or added to a fish sauce at the last minute so they don't go to mush.

Also makes a nice soup with some potato and chicken stock, and a little half fat creme fraiche. A lovely summery soup.

When do you split them? I grew some from seed and now have a fairly large clump in a shady raised bed. It's great in stews and soups and salads, omelletes, quiches, all sorts in fact.

I would wait til better weather when you can water in the divisions without risk of them freezing to death

I planted mine out yesterday as it's pot had been cracked to bits by frost. The plant looks fine.  I didn't water it in as we've still got snow on the ground here

They grow really easy from seed, 100s for £1.50 from pennard growing old seeds, I've germinated them outside in modules the red are less prolific i would sow loads from seed if you like them. I sowed a few as edging for tubs last year and received lots of compliments then transplated then onto the allotment a few weeks ago.

I've got sorrel in a planter on the balcony, have ignored it all winter and it's coming back again. Haven't noticed any whitefly on it, but perhaps it's too high for them to find it. I did try sorrel on the plot, and the slugs loved it too.  ;)
