Moving potatoes from greenhouse to outside
« on: April 02, 2013, 09:48 »
Hi All

I have 6 bags of potatoes growing merrily in the greenhouse which has been at about 8 degrees. What will happen to them if I move them outside to the patio, assuming of course I cover them at night. Will I lose them or will they just stall?

Thanks for any advice.

Are they in containers?
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

Yes they are in patio potato planters.

The foliage will be blackened and ruined by frost and there are many more cold nights to come yet, so I'd leave them inside if you can  :)

Potatoes can recover from frost damage, but if yours are well in leaf and used to a minimum of 8 degrees, they will struggle with day time temperatures with the wind chill we have at the moment, let alone night time cold  ;)

I haven't moved my potatoes into the greenhouse yet as the night time temps are still hovering around 0C. They are in an unheated room with large windowsso gets lots of light.
Should I move them? There is no sign of foliage yet.
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

I'd leave them where they are until they poke through, then keep your fingers crossed it's warmed up a bit!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks DD. I worry more about my veggies keeping warm than I do the family.
