For ponds, frogs like things to hide in like floating plants or oxygenating plants. They must have easy access in and out of the pond so some graduated stepping stones for them are very helpful. They also need a bit of shade so tallish plants to the south will also help.

i have a small pond on my new allotment, i cleared the weeds around it and there doesnt appear to be anything it.  Is there anything i can do with my pond to make it attractive to frogs?

Thanks
Michelle

Does your pond have a rigid liner or steep edges that will make it difficult for the wee froglets to climb out? If so, make a slope out of stone/bricks/turf.  A SMALL lump of frogspawn from a nearby pond will not only start the process but also may well attract frogs to come and spawn in there (they can smell it from miles). However, moving spawn around is now frowned on by the experts because of the risk of transferring disease. It's up to you...

Having emergent weeds (small irises etc) and plenty of pond weed is also improtnat to get a healthy ecosystem going. Fish are generally not good for tadpoles, but they can co-exist if there are inaccessible shallows for the taddies to hide in

To make your pond attractive to frogs plant some weeds around it ! :D

For most of the year frogs need cover more than they need a pond so overhanging plants (even weeds) are good. Frogs do not like tidy as there are fewer places to avoid predators and being exposed to the sun.
Old clay pots, tiles, log piles just about anything low to the ground they can squeeze under will keep them happy.

I grow frogs too.  :D    A warning -  Don't strim grass etc round the edge of the garden - they love to hide in the long grass by the fence. Cut the edges with shears or, better still, dont bother.   And later in the year when the little frogletts the size of 5p pieces are migrating from the pond and are all over the lawn, just mow more slowly and give them time to hop out of the way.

Its quite distressing to see a 3 legged frog and to know whose fault it was.

On  a lighter note, the recent cold snap has totally put them off their frantic antics in my pond  :D
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

Thanks for the advice on atrracting frogs.  It is a rigid pond on 2 levels, but i will find a couple of large stones to put in it.  There is some rhubarb that is already growing at one side of the pond and a bit of a garden area on the other side of it.  I will try some natural planting round it.  There isnt much shade where it is, so i will have to put my thinking cap on.

excellent froggie advice, not much I can add at all. Definitely good to leave little untidy areas around the plot and around pond to give them cover to move about.

I was thrilled to find my tiny little allotment pond full of frogspawn today!
