The one thing I would just put alongside the household rubbish for collection and not risk composting.

That sounds about right.

One of the plot holders on our site is a retired professor from a nearby school of agriculture.

He's always said that if you use supressant on a weed, it needs to be there for the full live cycle of it. That may be a few weeks in some cases, in a lot it's a year.  That's going to be the case with couch.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Ta double D
Sounds like sound advice.
Gonna dround some in batches in a bin when the weather warms up and leave the rest in bags to rot.
Dont like to take stuff off site a) because im lazy and b) because its greener

I had couch and nettle roots when i took over my allotment last year they were damp i broke up 2 pallets put them in a drum and set light to them when it was burning well i started to throw handfuls of the root on the fire before i left i stuffed what was left of the roots another 3 bags on the hot ashes when i returned the next day they were all gone have been helping a new member on site to burn his this year quickest way to be rid of them ...

That's the way I'd like to deal with it.

However, we're not allowed bonfires.

Is there a recycling centre around that takes garden waste? I think that is what I'd be doing with it.
