Duck to Drake ratio???
« on: March 06, 2013, 08:33 »
I have just bought a pair of Silver Call ducks. Besides being the cutest things ever tehy are insepaerable. They are 7mths old and have always been together. The duck, Esther, is the bossy one and the drake, Idris, is quieter.  They follow each other or walk side by side  and get very vocal if they are seperated.  The thing is I would like to buy some more but I am not sure if I should just get females or to get another pair.  Can you keep more than one drake in a group? I dont want to upset the pair I have? Any advice welcome  Cheers

Ducks are not as much as a problem to introduce new ones too as chickens. A pair of calls, perhaps even two pairs should be ok as they are reported to be a little less... enthusiastic... in their mating. Generally it is better to have more females as otherwise they can get very bedraggled (or even drowned) by the male's attention.

With most ducks I would say that 1:2 was a minimum male to female ratio and 1:4 or 5 would be ideal.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
