TATSOI
« on: February 21, 2013, 12:58 »
Anyone else sowing Tatsoi?

I just checked the packet instructions and it says it can be sown all year round and is very tolerant to cold, and can be sown under glass for early sowings, or direct in the soil in spring under a cloche

I sowed some direct into my raised bed back end of last year and they did brilliantly.  Apparently you cut the head but leave the stalk and it will re-grow

I grow it but it gets too warm here in summers so for me it's strictly fall to spring growing only.

I sowed some late in the summer and ate most of it in the Autumn -- very juicy and delicious

The remaining plants did not overwinter though

A few questions: -

Can it be grown in containers or is it too deep rooted?
Is it best cut while young as per baby spinach?
Is it good used in mixed salads?
What are the main pests? I assume slugs and snails!
Any recommendations on where to get seed from?

I sowed some late summer/early autumn and they were looking handsome for winter cropping, and then I discovered pigeons are partial to them too.  I was about to rip them out but noticed they were recovering so I covered with fleece.  So fingers crossed.

Last year I grew mine in a raised bed and they were covered with Enviromesh

I grew my first ever Tatsoi in a big tub that I'd used for growing spuds. I used the same compost, just planted them straight in, and they did very well.  I left them to develop into proper rosettes and then ate them, rather than just individual leaves, but that would be up to you.  I think flea beetle might be a problem too but I planted them late in the season so maybe they were not around then. Enviromesh is really good stuff and keeps bugs out as well
as pigeons etc off the crop

You can get the seed anywhere as it's very common  :)
