Crown Bleeding
« on: February 11, 2013, 19:10 »
My white leghorn had blood spots all over her back when I went to check on them this afternon. After investigation I noticed that hse must have caught her crown and it was bleeding. It appeared to have no ill effect and the other chicken as not trying to peck the blooming areas. Should I just leave it to heal on its own accord or should I do womething with it?

Do you mean her breast when you say crown or her comb?

You can use purple spray to cover any blooming areas which will help it heal.  Any areas near the head use a cotton bud to apply the spray.  You can also use wound powder or cornflour if you don't have wound powder.

You would need to find out how the damage was done so that it doesn't happen again.

I've had to deal with a couple of injuries since keeping chickens and have always used the purple gentian spray - it covers up the blood by dying it purple to prevent other hens pecking, and is also antiseptic

Yes I meant the comb.
Bleeding again on Saturday - she scratches it on a a prickly bush - so have cut down the lower branches.
We have some anti pecking spray which is ant bacterial so applied that with a bit of tissue on Saturday which stopped the other pecking. She appeared right as rain on Sunday and no further issues so fingers crossed.
Thanks for your help

Check her for ear mites as that might be causing her to scratch.
