Garlic
« on: February 17, 2013, 20:35 »
Looking at my garlic today and they all seem a bit worse for wear after the recent snow.

the first shoot seems to be going yellow but there is new shoots coming and it is on all of them i am telling myself it must have been the cold.

has anyone else got this?

Garlic is very hardy and indeed needs the cold.

It's more likely to be due to the excessive wet we've had. They'll get over it!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hope they do.

Mind you the garlic planted in the garden last year was eaten by the chickens twice and we still had good bulbs from it.

All the veg is going from the garden because when the chickens find the lush yummy greens ( no matter how we protect it from them ) they demolish it all. (they never seem to think about tomorrow :) )

I left my garlic in a trough in the green house and forgot about it over winter.  The other half reminded me about it on Friday so I went to rescue it, looks really healthy

It's out in the open now, looking ok.
first there is a mountain then there is no mountain then there is

My chickens always loved garlic too - nothing worse than garlicky chicken breath though

I only just planted mine today - terribly late so I am hoping the forecasters will be right about the cold snap next week.

Five or so years ago, before I took on my allotment, I planted garlic with a mallet and chisel to hammer into frozen soil. It was the best crop to date!
