Freezing peas
« on: January 27, 2013, 22:25 »
Is there a tried and tested method for freezing my peas as they never seem all that nice especially now when they have spent all that time in the freezer.
Sorry if this is covered in previous thread.
All I have done up to now is wash, dry chuck 'em in a bag and then into the freezer.
I get a similar deterioration in flavour with broad beans.
Thanks,
C

Blanch them for 2 mins first.

You won't tell the difference.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

It partly depends how much they've started turning to starch before picking - last year I left mine too late to pick and they weren't very nice.

But you should consider blanching them to improve their storage:

(Snap, DD!)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I have tried blanching other veg like caulis and found that it doesn't seem to make much difference.  I'll give it a go on the peas though. Thanks

I think you only get away without blanching, if you're going to eat them quickly.

I grow enough to last, at least,  into the new year - so I blanch. If it's good enough for Mr Birdeye - it's good enough for me  :D

Freeze? Peas?   Mine often don't even get to the kitchen, let alone freezer.  What with me picking them and Pennydog hoping I'll drop the bowl, there's never many left for dinner!
