Egg laying debate.
« on: January 14, 2013, 09:22 »
I am in ‘debate’ with my friend and his wife and perhaps you could assist. As I understand it the reproductive cycle of a chicken is just over 24 hrs, this being the case each chicken could lay 1 egg per day. However, my friends wife insists one of hers lays twice a day. I say this is physically impossible, what are your thoughts?

you may get the odd occasion where one egg is slow coming out and another slightly quicker thus giving you two on one day. However for those types of hens bred for their egg laying abilities they will usually lay 6 or 7 eggs a week for the first 2 years. Pure breeds however will lay less eggs per week sometimes only three or four eggs per week.
All hens are bred with their complete total of eggs - these look like they are on a ribbon and once those eggs are used up then that is it for that hen and she goes into retirement.
Staffies are softer than you think.

We have on occasion had 6 eggs a day from 5 chickens. This seems to happen more during the summer months  where there are more daylight hours and the chickens have a longer day.
Equally we have had days where we get 4 eggs a day from 5 chickens.
Do we count double yolkers as 1 egg or 2?  :D

When one of my chickens first  started laying she tried to lay 2 eggs a day, neithe had a good shell and one was often very thin/pappert etc... she sorted herself out in time though. Certianly not the norm!

Do you think it may have something to do with food?

I have read that commercial chickens have just the right amount of food but i just fill my feed container up when it's empty and give them a corn treat in the morning while they are on grass (now mud) all day long.

I get between  .6 to .9 eggs per hen per day.
