Spring Greens All Summer........
« on: January 03, 2013, 20:27 »
Hi All,

it's been a long time since last post so apologies for that but have found myself asking the question are Spring Greens from cabbages possible all thru the growing season and if so what would be the ideal cabbage to plant? any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Never grown cabbages so not sure about them but kale (which I prefer the taste of) can be grown through pretty much all of the year and stands well through winter. I really only seem to get a gap in the middle of summer when last years has finished and this years isn't yet up to speed. Doesn't really answer your question though!

Spring Greens are really immature cabbages, which are harvested before they have hearted up.

It is perfectly possible to have these all year round, especially if you sow them in a row, when you can thin them as you eat.

A rapid growing sort like Durham Early would be fine, although tbh probably any green leaved smallish cabbage would do the job

Hope that helps

I was also thinking about having a constant supply my bunnies get through a couple a week. I don't really have the paitents to wait the best part of a year for cabbages

There has to be a starting point but if you grow Hispi F1 Hybrid Cabbage, it can be grown almost any season of the year, and is extremely fast to mature. Autumn sowings can even beat the best of spring cabbages! Normally sow March to July at 4 week intervals, but if bunnies are that hungry try every two weeks. Harvest June to October.

They can be sown in autumn and overwintered for planting out early spring.

You found that out very quickly for someone who got their allotment two months ago!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

only trouble is I could also do with a constant supply of other veg for them too. I don't mind the odd pile of spring greens on my plate but not a big cabbagy fan

That’s what I'm finding difficult is working out just how many of everything I need - and how many to plant each week - fortnight - three or four weeks apart to provide produce for as long as possible - and I'm looking at grow houses and cold frames to allow me to increase the growing season of as much as possible.

You need to plan for your rabbits then too -- all year round saladings are easy to grow, and carrots can be availabel almost the whole year too, juts for starters  ;)

Have planted some "Duncan " cabbage being sold off cheap at a Garden Centre in November - you can harvest them now as small cabbages - but they do say with succession sowing you can harvest Duncan cabbages all year round - Have already had a few and they taste OK . struggling a bit a the moment as the stems are being nibbled by Mice or slugs ( not sure which really ) and the outer leaves are yellowing quite badly ( probably water logging - clay soil is saturated) - nevertheless I am hopeful of some spring  cabbages to harvest in March / April.

Thanks all, I guess the constant in this thread is that the most popular variety would be a pointed type"spring cabbage", I've also read that Duncan can be sown throughtout the season....... cheers all.
