My hen is limping, what could be wrong with her?
« on: November 11, 2012, 13:23 »
My lovely Mavis is limping.
She was fine yesterday but today she is hobbling about trying to keep all of her weight on her other foot and also sitting down a lot because it obviously hurts her.
She is still eating lots and trying to forage and appears to be otherwise healthy.
I lifted her up and had a look at her foot for any inflammation but there doesn't appear to be any (yet).
Is it possible that she may have just sprained her ankle? She's always charging about and tripping over things like a nutter.
I've removed the perch from the bedding area and put in extra bedding so it is soft for her poor old leg.
Is there anything else that I can do to help her? I don't know whether it's bumblefoot or not because there isn't any redness or swelling...
Memory is a selection of images. Some illusive, others printed indelibly on the brain.

check her pads to see if there is a thorn or similar stuck in, also check in any creases in her foot.
They can sprain their ankles so keep a close eye on her.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I keep checking her foot, there doesn't seem to be anything.
I took the perch out of the coop and by yesterday afternoon she had stopped limping and was charging around as normal.
So I put the perch back in and today she is back limping again! I'm going to take it out for a few days because I'm pretty sure that isn't helping. Otherwise she is fine, eating as normal etc.

There must be a million causes for lameness but I just thought I would mention one that my chicken had once.

One of my other chickens had been laying eggs without shells and so I had been feeding them a calcium supplement and another chicken I had went lame. It turned out that she had gout and as soon as I changed the food and stopped giving calcium supplement she was much better.

Just a thought. Hope you find out what it is, there is so little known about chickens, even the vets often don't know.
