Wing Clipping
« on: March 31, 2009, 22:36 »
Hi, Do most people clip their chicken's wings??  Is this something that will be done when I buy them and is it easy to do yourself??

Only slightly panicking at the prospect!!

Will you need to clip their wings? Are they free ranging and do you have low fences etc?
If you do you only clip one wing so it puts them off balance when they try to fly.

Here is how to do it yourself.

Its easy to do but if you take a sharp pair of kitchen scissors with you when you pick the birds up i`m sure they will show you how as they are crated up.

Many Thanks, will take a look.
Chickens will mainly be in their run but intend to let them roam around the garden whenever possible.  Our fences are about 6ft but I have heard chickens can fly quite well if they decide to and I would hate to lose any, we live in a fairly built up area and i don't relish the thought of hurdling the neighbours fences after any escapees!

Will read through the post and fingers crossed they will all prefer to keep their feet on the ground.

You don't need to clip as much off as is shown in that web site.

Just the 8 or 9 primaries shoud be OK and leave them about an in long so that you don't cut into the feather's blood supply :
