Dwarf fruit trees yield
« on: October 17, 2010, 19:59 »
My wife and I recently got our allotment. Unfortunately there are rules regarding fruit trees. We have however seen the dwarf trees available which we'd love for the allotment and for our house.

We make jams and chutneys and everything we grow on the allotment is used this way and want to grow our own apples and pears.

Are these trees worth getting and roughly how much fruit do these trees produce annually?

Thanks in advance.

Karl

They do not produce much fruit. I have 6 or 7 on M27 rootstock, about 6ft, and I would say 4-6 apples a year. The M9 rootstock makes 8-10.

Problem is if more set then they are smaller, or simply drop off.

They are limited by the roostock that forms a smaller rootball so the tree is smaller and the number of branches and leaves are smaller/less. The outcome being less apples/fruit.

Also have a columnar apple that is about 8-10 ft high and well established, 10 years,, this year it made 8-10 apples but of reasonable size.

For fruit you need M26 (12ft tree), or M106 (15ft tree).

I would agree with SG6, if you want enough fruit for jams and chutneys you need something bigger. The very dwarf trees are OK if you just want to pick a few apples to munch on. I have a mature James Grieve which is about 12 feet high and has given me about 55lbs of fruit so far this year. 3 of my 4 trees are on semi-dwarfing rootstocks and the cooker is a huge thing but between them they give between 150 and 200lbs of apples each year plus windfalls which I mainly leave for the birds
