Dwarf fruit trees (Minarettes)?
« on: March 27, 2007, 15:35 »
Hi All,

Has anyone bought and had any success with these. I haven't got the room for big trees, but have seen these that you can put in pots on the patio.

Just wondered whether or not you do get the crops that they advertise.

Any help would be appreciated before I part with my hard earned !!

I have a few - by far the most successful one (plum) was in a pot on a hot roof terrace - when I moved this one to my allotment it did much less well. I have several apples and pears at the allotment and crops are reasonable, but nothing like what they advertise, but - as you say - they don't take up much space and maybe with more care and attention than I have given them they would do better.

Hi Kerry

I got two patio apple trees for my birthday last year, there came from wilkos, they are doing well, growing but no fruit as yet, but I am sure this is expected.

Hiya,

I had a pear from wilkos last year, it grew really well but then snapped in the wind coz like a twit I didn't stake it.

The ones I've seen on t'internet were about £50 for an "orchard" (3 to be precise). Thought it was pricey but apparently they are 4 feet tall, and should fruit the following year.

Kerry.  :)

Hi

One of my apple trees snapped in the wind and it had a stake but it seems to have recovered.

Hi skywalker,

Are they suitable for pots do you know ? Would rather pay that than £50.

we have put 12 of ken muirs on the allotment over winter - all budding nicely - especially the crab apple (OH assures me you have to have  a crab apple) - types very from cherry to plums to damson to eating and cooking apple - we are on silt soil so was a bit worried about some of them  - so heres hoping we get at least some of a crop!!

I've just planted a small orchard on our second plot - there'll be nine trees in all, I've got eight in.  There's Bramley and Cox's apples, Comice Pear, cherry Stella, plum Victoria, peach, kiwi (male and female) - just need an Egremont Russet to complete the set.

I got three of the trees (Bramley, cherry & pear) for four quid in Lidl, the kiwis in the bargain bin for a tenner the pair, the Cox off ebay for a fiver, and the plum and peach were a tenner each from B&Q.  So not too much spent there!

They're all sprouting (I only planted them last week), so I'm quite excited, I've never grown fruit before.

Hi Kerry. Yes I think they are all suitable for pots. Grow to 1.5m. I have put them in the ground but the label (not very informative) shows them being planted in pots!
