Title: How are your tomatoes doing so far?
Post by: JayG on July 16, 2012, 15:27
Don't think anyone is going to be reporting a record crop this year, but I was wondering just how well or badly others were getting on with them so far this year.

Mine:

Indoors (greenhouse)

Sungold, Sweet Million and Inca (plum) - all recovering their colour after growing quite strongly but with very pale leaves. My guess is that the compost (two types of MP including the much-criticised Wickes "straw" compost) is lower in nutrients than "proper" tomato growbags as they picked up considerably after feeding with a mixture of Miracle Grow, tomato fertiliser and Epsom salts.

Sungold is the first to set fruits, but I'm a long way away from eating any of them yet!

Outdoors (sort of!)

Old faithful "Red Alert" are in their usual place (the cold frame with the covers half open to give them room) and although not quite as rampant as in previous years are setting lots of fruit and are well ahead of the greenhouse tomatoes despite being planted out 2 weeks later.

Outdoors I have 6 overflow toms and they are pants. The plants look as if they're dying tbh  :(

"Thank goodness for the greenhouse ones", say I ;)

The early sown Gartenperle have been brilliant, maybe not the tastiest but better than Trashco and they were early to ripen ;) They're just finishing so I wish the others would get a shift on now!
San Marzano and Maja Bush seem to be the only varieties not fazed by the low lightlevels, they're growing and cropping well, but still green.
Scotland yellow is laden with fruit but no sign of ripening.
Lemon Drop and Black Cherry no ripening, and these 2 have more nodes between fruit trusses than is normal, so although they're up to the roof, there's not much fruit :(
Coure di Bue, Cherokee Purple, Cuban Black, Rio Grande and Purple Ukraine only a few have set on each plant.
Carlton, my favourite beefsteak from last year, has no fruits set at all yet!
I hope there's still time, but beginning to doubt it..........

At least I know which ones to grow if the weather is like this in the future  ::)

All mine are outside (not greenhouse!)

I picked my first Sungold at the weekend (I have 9 plants!), started off at the beginning of march!  The plants themself do look a little sorry for themselves, leaves dark green in colour but rather curled!  The tomatoes tasted yummy though, wasn't sure if they were ready to pick as I wasn't sure how orange they would go so I picked on to find out!

Plum tomatoes (3 plants) 1 of which is just setting fruit (I did knock off a truss as I transplanted!), started later April.

Beef tomato (1 plant) just setting fruit on a number of stusses, lot of growin to do now sure if I'll actually get to pick any, started late April.

Hannah :)

I have 4 varieties; sweet100, stupice, Siberian, subarctic plenty.

Sweet 100 and stupice are doing really fine on my semi-protected terras at home. Lots of trusses, and on one plant some tomatoes now started to change colour.

Siberian and stupice are also doing quite fine outside, carrying also a decent amount of fruits, but the plants are smaller than the ones at home. I was really surprised about how well they are actually doing outside. It hasn't been the greatest summer here. Temperatures are quite low compared to last year.

Sub-arctic plenty is lagging behind all other varieties. They started to flower really late and only a few plants now show some tiny fruits. I'm a bit worried that they won't produce much at all at the end of the season, which is approaching quickly here in finland.

The quick answer is rubbish :(

Don't have a green house. :(

All the varieties planted much of a muchness. Gardeners delight, tiny toms from seed saved from supermarket toms, roma, and another old favourite whose name escapes me at the moment.

Most are in pots and a few I stuck in the ground in the garden long before I should have.
There are flowers on all of them and some are setting fruit but no sign of any ripening.

Thank goodness for the Turkish Food Centre and their boxes of toms at £3.50. :( :(
This year is really dispiriting. :(

Vanessas are doing well - still green, but hey, through in a banana skin and watch them ripen.  Have also got a crop of Tigeralla - not so hot :tongue2:

Outside toms only here.  I have 1 tomato still green on my Golden Sunrise.  The remaining 14 plants are as follows:
Aranyalma, 2 of these look quite sturdy, several flower trusses, no fruit yet
Cuban Flower, 2 sturdy plants, not so tall as Aranyalma, with flowers, no fruit
Essex Wonder, 2 plants, around 15" high with 1 truss of flowers each.
Principe Borghese. 2 plants, 1 a lot better tha the other, flowers no fruit.
Golden Sunrise, 2 plants, quite small and just getting first flowers.
Aurora, 2 plants, pathetically tiny with no flowers yet.
Stupice, 1 plant, battling bravely despite being attacked by slugs, 1 flower truss.
Super Marmande, 1 plant, has decided to have 2 main stems for some reason, lots of flowers and quite sturdy and tall, but no fruit.

Have sprayed against blight, just hoping this will be successful, given I have had no crop at all yet.
I need a greenhouse.

Did you read the comments on your other thread about your pH, mickbrov?

A pH of 2 is almost pure acid.  It has to be an inaccurate reading (not your fault, but the test kit).

I agree with Yorkie. If weeds don't grow there is something wrong, but if you are getting healthy weeds, the ph figure you quote is nowhere near accurate.

Sowed some Sungold far too early (mid feb), and with only a couple of hours direct sunlight each day.  Sure enough they grew spindly and have been generally sickly since I put them in the greenhouse in late April. They've been producing for a while now but even for cherrys they're small!

Nonetheless I've been eating tomatoes for two weeks now whilst I wait for the later sown ones to catch up :)

The only ones I can rely on this year is my saved Roma and Golden Sunrise. I have a couple of Gardeners Delight but that is about all.

Indoors - Shirley and Sungold - plants look very healthy and have set fruit but it will be a long time before I will be eating any home grown toms.

Outdoors - also Shirley and Sungold - plants knee high to a grasshopper. Look healthy enough and even have some fruits setting.

My sweet millions (which did so well last year) did not even get off the starting block - a total wipeout.

Well you've seen the pics of my greenhouse  ::)  Now semi-tamed  ;)  Lots of flowers and some good green fruits but nothing ripe yet.

Outside got Maskotka growing in hanging baskets and although the plants look a little battered, they have a lot of green fruit on them  :)

Outside got Alicante and Roma. First year of outside on new allotment, 12 plants of each.
Planted out at the beginning of June and finally have stopped looking yellow and pale and are showing some signs of growing!
Couple of trusses set.
Greenhouse, Sungold, Tigerella and a baby tomato of a variety I have forgotten (dog ate packet!) 3 of each
Going great guns in terms of growth and a few trusses set, but will be some time before we are eating homegrown :(
Luckily I have a love of green tomato chutney............................

At home in greenhouse all OK bar one (Amish Paste) which has only just decided to flower at 1.2m tall

Mintunnel at the plot is fine. Have two sungold fruits that will be ready this weekend YAYYYY

Giant cloche-thingy is rampant, including Amish Paste

Most heavily fruiting so far are Black Sea Man, Black Krim and Gardener's Delight. Sungold as always chugging along  :D

In the greenhouse... sweet pea tomatoes - out of three plants, one has been decimated bygreen/whitefly, spotted one tomato on one of the others. Sweet 100 - have a couple of baby tomatoes and not a lot of flowers. Tumbler toms - loads of flowers but no fruit as yet.

The 100's & 1000's have ... Erm ... 3 tiny green tomatoes   Outdoor toms (100's-1000's & garden pearl ) not happy at all and dodgy brown spots appearing on some leaves).

Greenhouse toms (100's&1000's, GP, GD and Ailsa Craig) still only in flower and only a single truss on each cordon plant - quite a few unset failures on GP and 100's  :(. Not looking too hopeful at the minute  :nowink:

Smashing. Grown from seed in a cold greenhouse, took ages to get going. Now they are really tonking away. Each truss has loads of flowers/fruit. So many, I shall have to nip some off because of the sheer weight, even if tied up.

Fair to middling, hold lots of promise - plenty of green tomatoes, but have only had one ripe one so far.  I am growing Beefsteak, Costaluto plum, black cherry, red berry, gardeners delight, sungold and sunburst.  Majority in a GH, with only a handful planted out on new plot because I had room - the outside ones have small fruits but the plants are half the height of the GH ones.

Starting to look good picked a few plum toms from the greenhouse The sole survivor of a feb sowing , rest are a bit behind but have set fruits or flowers , even have some marble sized fruits on the moneymakers outside . so once the sun comes looking good if the blight keeps away

mine not looking good either. had them indoors but decided to plant outside and looking on the weaker side. one plant has a tomato growing but its very small. i'm not sure which variety they are  as i ripped the top of the packet and that may have had the name  :nowink:. they are the free T&M pack when you buy 2.....if that helps  ::)

Next year i'm hoping to grow franchi tomato seeds called Pomodoro Pantano....in other words they look like big ones on the packets   :tongue2: going to grow quite a few of these and plant outside

My 4 moneymaker tomato plants are huge and have plenty flowers but no fruit as yet.  Is there still plenty summer left for them to fruit and ripen or will I be cooking up a lot of chutney?

Had four small red tomatoes off the bush tomato this morning, we all had one each with our breakfast!! But that's it for that plant, as the growing tip seems to have been broken off so it's not producing any more growth.

For the rest of the varieties, I am getting a good number of flowers.... I just hope some of these flowers start turning into fruit....

The summer cider problem I have already asked about, as the flowers are drpping off. But the others varieties seem to be doing well, with lots and lots of flowers on most of them, and the bush-yellow variety (sweet n neat yellow) plants have upwards of 100 flowers on each...!
