Post by: moggy on January 17, 2008, 08:51
HI Everyone,

i have been looking at some timber to use for raised beds and i was just wondering what sort of height everyone reccomended as the planks i was lookin at would be about 15cm high, will this be big enough or should i go a bit higher?

cheers

Hiya Moggy,

I'm using raised beds for the first time this season. I'm using scaffolding boards which are about 9 inches wide I think it's about 225mm in new money. I've dug the beds over to a spades depth and added compost and topsoil  to bring the  level to within 2 inches of the top of the boards.

6" gravel boards are fine, they're what I've used.

is it worth putting some kind of barrier between the wood and the soil to stop the treatments contaminating the soil?
