Title: Shattered
Post by: poppies on May 12, 2010, 11:54
I have been cleaning coops since 7.30 am  and I am shattered, not the scraping, shoveling, disinfecting, wheelbarrowing etc, no - just trying to get the new shavings off of the compacted bale i used fingers, trowel, screwdriver, and  in the end a claw hammer.

10 minutes later the little darlings had scratched half of it out into the run, why do I bother.

You should be able to remove a large "flake" from the bale, rather than breaking your fingers on it! Then you can bash it up with a fork or shovel. Don't knock the hard ones....you get more for your money! :D

And I thought it was just me standing there losing the ends of my fingers :D

I use hemcore now, and it fluffs up much easter than woodshavings.  When I did use woodshavings I just use to lever off a great lump and chuck it in the coop, and the girls would sort it out!  Strangely their toes seem to be stronger than my fingers, and they much prefer to arrange it themselves.  I never got it right for them!
