I heard on the news tonight that we should all be hugging a slug (they didnt mention snails though)

They said we should forgive them eating our fresh planted lettuce and cabbages
They even said that gardeners might have a 'hug and slug day'
(anyone here going to hug a slug?)
Someone said she gathers them up and puts them in her compost container, (I thought that would be the last place you want slugs)
I'll still be putting out a saurer  of beer to trap them, going out with a torch and tongs to catch the little blighters
I've been told the leopard slug eats other slugs, don know if that is true though, I've only seen one

Are they joking? Slimy horrible things that eat rows of our precious seedlings and then, even if we get a few to grow, they're still trying to eat our food before we do!

I couldnt agree more, I dont care what they say about them, I wont be 'hugging no slugs'

But it is a war that never seems to end, all we can do is hunt them down the best we can
I do seem to have a friendly bird that helps me with the snails though, he has a favourite stone he uses to beatr the hell out of them, he is more than welcome in my garden

I saw that item on the telly and my first thought (and last) was' no way'.   Yes the Leopard slug was 'pretty' (in it's own way) but  I still don't want it in my garden, thank you.

The real trouble is telling the 'helpful' and 'hungry' slugs apart

Soo what after you using to catch them?
I’ve found the pellets work, but aren’t friendly to wildlife (plus they go furry after rain)
A saucer of beer works sometimes, but it’s not guaranteed to work

I went out tonight torch in hand, never found any slugs but I picked up 20 odd snails (I’ve saved them for my friendly bird that likes them)

I use slug pellets but put them in a DIY trap like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=Y8kzTfxX9Pk but you could use beer. (I've never tried the bait used in the video, so don't know if that works)

That video was interesting, might be worth a try
But I begrudge using decent beer to kill them
There is another video where he uses lime around his cabbages (he really has masses of slugs, not sure how that would affect his cabbages or the soil

I made the slug trap, it worked well
I couldnt find a pot with a lid, so used two starbucks coffee cups
Worked quite well, I found 4 slugs in the pot
Not many, but its a start

On GW suggest you put netting in bottom of plant pots to stop creepies getting in from the base.

PS did you hear about the guy in Australia who ate a slug for a dare? One month later he was in a coma and three months later he was dead!
